About Bridges of New York
Bridges of New York will be opening a 25-bed
facility in Nassau County to accommodate men, who have been
struggling with substance abuse, upon their release from
jail. The overall mission of the facility is to assist released
offenders by providing transitional housing and other support
services to help them maintain a drug-free, independent,
honest life as they re-enter the community.
The Bridge program has been proven successful for over 30
years by Bridges of America, as the residents in the program
have consistently shown a significantly lower rate of recidivism
than those who have been released directly into the general
population.
Father Brett Crompton had been working with James* through
the in-prison Bridges of New York Program for some months,
when James received an unexpected call from him one afternoon.
Released early! The day he was released, James was alone
at a train station with $20.00 and had run out of prospects
for a place to stay that night.
James had already made the pivotal decision to break the
$20.00 for change to call Brett instead of spending it to
get high. Brett picked him up immediately, and through one
of his many contacts, was able to obtain a bed for James
in a program that very night.
Brett realized how frequently similar scenarios have taken
place for him over the years, and this experience solidified
his resolve to open a Bridges of America facility in Nassau
County.
Bishop Craig Bates of the Cathedral Church of the Intercessor,
under whom Brett is an ordained Priest, has had the vision
of opening a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Nassau
County for some time, as it was Bishop Bates who sent Brett
to train in Florida under Bishop Frank Costantino in the
Bridges of America program. After spending a full year in
Florida, Brett had moved to England for 6 months in order
to gain further training, while working for the Bridges
in-prison program there.
With Bp. Bates and Bp. Costantino's support, the Bridges
vision has been progressing, and has already been proven
successful in the Nassau County Correctional Center.
We look forward to the success of our transitional program
and the fulfillment of a more fruitful life for the lives
we touch.
